I was listening to a diploma student describe a client who felt “stuck”.

As they repeated what the client had said, something immediately stood out. Almost every sentence contained words like must, can’t, or have to. Nothing dramatic. Nothing complex.Just a pattern hiding in plain sight.

The client wasn’t really talking about the problem. They were describing the rules they were living by.

It’s easy to miss this kind of thing when you’re focused on techniques or trying to do something impressive. But most clients tell you how they experience choice and limitation very early on, if you’re listening in the right way.
